Executive Director

Climate One seeks a leader with an entrepreneurial spirit who is excited to report, for a transitional period, directly to and partner closely with its founder, Greg Dalton. The ideal candidate brings a successful track record of building the strategic direction of fundraising and communications to ensure the continued growth and greater visibility of Climate One’s impactful work.

The key focus of this role will include: cultivating and soliciting major gifts from newly identified individuals, institutions, corporations and foundations; building strategic partnerships; and reimagining and executing a marketing and communications plan that will increase the visibility and financial resources needed for long-term sustainability.

Climate One is the premier platform for empowering conversations that connect all aspects of the climate emergency. Through its podcast, national radio show, and live events, they inspire dialogue and promote a more complete understanding of the current crisis. Between the weekly radio program, which airs on more than 90 NPR stations around the US, and the podcast, each episode is heard by more than 200,000 listeners.

Since its founding in 2007 by Greg Dalton, Climate One has been based at the Commonwealth Club of California, a nonpartisan organization with a 120-year history of fostering civic dialogue. Climate One is proud to continue this work by convening people, connecting ideas, and inspiring new approaches to address the most important issue of our time. The team is driven by the belief that viable, long-term responses to climate disruption can only come from a concerned, informed, and engaged citizenry; the mission is to make sure the conversation around climate change remains diverse, robust, and at the forefront of our civic dialogue.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leads Climate One’s strategic direction to sustain and grow the organization, with a particular focus on managing revenue generation, audience engagement, and program distribution.
  • Directs and executes the fund development activities with a focus on increasing major donor giving and event participation and support.
  • Builds a strong pipeline and incorporates best practices of keeping donors engaged and motivated to provide ongoing support.
  • Directs implementation of communication and marketing strategies to strengthen brand presence, visibility, and audience reach.
  • Sets clear priorities and metrics for success and measures the ROR (Return on Relationships) along with ROI.
  • Manages Climate One’s operations, fundraising, and marketing team.
  • Collaborates closely with the editorial team to stay up-to-date on issues and programs to motivate potential donors and partnering organizations.
  • Serves as a passionate spokesperson, advocate, and ambassador for Climate One.

Professional Experience & Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and build thoughtful and caring relationships with both external and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide innovative leadership in developing and implementing new creative strategies for increasing fund development and organizational visibility.
  • Successful track record of over 10 years in diversifying and increasing fund development along with an understanding of current trends and best practices in fundraising.
  • Experience in brand management and ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences and develop a broad spectrum of proactive media relations.
  • Experience supervising and managing diverse teams with robust feedback culture.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the shifting media landscape, including funding streams and changing audience patterns.
  • Knowledge and expertise in effectively using technology and social media for communicating with stakeholders and increasing visibility.
  • Aptitude to develop knowledge of climate/environmental policy or related fields.

Compensation

A competitive compensation package with a salary range of $125-$175k and benefits will be provided to the successful candidate.
