Emily B. Miller was inspired by the idea of a simple final resting place in nature to become the founder of Colorado’s first environmental Burial Preserve. With a background in religious studies, Miller was training for funeral directing credentials when she first came across the concept of natural burial and conservation cemeteries. Though she worked for conventional funeral and cemetery providers, Miller retained a special appreciation for arrangements that align with the natural world and allow access to the benefits of ritual and community.
Miller founded Colorado Burial Preserve & Cremation Garden in 2020 in response to the lack of natural habitat burial options in the state. A cross between a nature preserve and a cemetery, Miller’s vision is now an end-of-life option for those who are unsatisfied with or alienated by conventional cemeteries. Burials in this setting offer a deeper meaning of “rest in peace,” while reminding participants that returning to the earth’s cycles in death is a natural part of life.
Opening a cemetery also opened a dialogue with funeral homes and the community about what these burial services should look like, and Miller now advocates for a sustainable industry through education and outreach. She volunteers on the Board of Directors for the Green Burial Council, which has exposed her to perspectives from funeral service providers across the United States and Canada. Miller teaches Green Burial Council webinars, guests lectures for Mortuary College programs, presents at industry conferences, and has appeared as a subject matter expert for television journalists and documentarians.
