Democratic presidential candidate Tom Steyer is a business leader and philanthropist who believes we have a moral responsibility to ensure that every family shares the benefits of economic opportunity, education, and a healthy climate. With this responsibility in mind, Steyer and his wife have pledged to contribute most of their wealth to charitable causes during their lifetimes.
Prior to entering the 2020 Democratic primaries, Steyer was the founder and president of NextGen America and co-CEO of Beneficial State Bank in Oakland. He and his wife founded this nonprofit community bank in 2007 to provide loans to people and small businesses shut out by the traditional banking system. By statute, the bank invests all profit back into the community.
